With perhaps only two weeks before Apple plans to launch its next-generation iPhone, industry sources have leaked a very interesting piece of information regarding Apple’s supply chain - some 150,000 iPhone 5 handsets are now being assembled every day, in anticipation of the smartphone’s impending launch.

According to this industry intel, Foxconn Electronics is responsible with the massive amounts of iPhone 5 production, but it is was previously reported that some of the workload would be handled by rival Pegatron Technology.

The latter has such a small order of iPhone 5 production (15%) that it seemed irrelevant to mention next to Foxconn’s huge (85%) stake in the contract.

However, the industry sources did say that Pegatron would begin shipping its own works in 2012.

Apple contractees in the iPhone 5 supply chain in Taiwan have reportedly “geared up production” in recent days.

Volume shipments of the fifth-gen smartphones are to begin soon, industry publication Digitimes reports.

While production of iPhone 5 at OEM Foxconn Electronics has reached 150,000 units per day, industry sources said, Largan Precision (lens vendor), TPK Holding (touch panel maker), G-Tech Optoelectronics (reinforced glass supplier) and Simplo and Dynapack (battery makers) are all firing on all cylinders as well.

Industry watchers are expecting the Apple iPhone 5 to amass 5-6 million shipments in September alone.

The handset should top 22 million units shipped by the fourth quarter of Apple’s fiscal 2011 as suppliers will begin to tone down iPhone 4 assembly.

CDMA iPhone production is also expected to take a hit towards the end of the year, the sources said.

The report makes no mentioning of any timeframe for customer shipping.

However, if history bears any indication, Apple should invite members of the media to their traditional fall event later this month in the San Francisco area, where Tim Cook will take the cloth off their new iPhone 5.

Pre-orders for the iPhone 5 should kick off later this month, and shipments should begin early in October.
