Such sightings are few and far in between, wildlife experts say

This past Thursday, a group of 14 sperm whales were seen swimming around in the Firth of Forth, the estuary of Scotland's River Forth.

Wildlife researchers were overjoyed when hearing the news about this sighting, not just because such marine mammals seldom show up in these waters, but also because sperm whales are rarely seen swimming around in large numbers.

Because no calves were spotted hanging out with this group, it is believed that the pod was made up of male sperm whales.

“The previous close sighting of sperm whales in North Berwick was exactly 10 years ago this month when a large sperm whale landed on the beach at Canty Bay, but this is certainly the largest group of living whales we’ve seen travelling together in or near the Firth of Forth,” marine conservationist Erich Hoyt reportedly said.
