News from China says that, not too long ago, a woman living in this part of the world successfully delivered a baby boy whose birth weight was one of 14 pounds (approximately 6.35 kilograms).

The doctors who helped this woman, identified as Mrs. Tian, bring her child into the world say that the baby boy is by far the biggest infant they have until now had the chance to lay eyes on.

“It's the first time I've delivered such a baby in my 30-year career,” the current director of the Chongji Maternity Hospital in the city of Yecheng in China's Shanxi province told the press in an interview, as cited by Daily Mail.

Information made available to the public says that this baby boy is the woman's second child. It was born on August 23, at about 7:30 p.m. local time, by C-section, and appears to be in good health and active, media reports say.

A photo available next to this article shows the baby enjoying a midday nap, looking all cute and cuddly in his pink pajamas. As adorable as he might be, one has to admit that his rosy cheeks do seem to be a bit too plump for his age.

To put things into perspective, it must be said that, according to specialists working with the World Health Organization, babies are supposed to tip the scale at about 3 kilograms (around 6.6 pounds) when they are born.

This means that the baby boy born to this 34-year-old woman in China is about twice the size of the average newborn. In fact, doctors who have had the chance to examine him say that, size-wise, he looks more like a 3-month-old than a newborn.

Rumor has it that the doctors and nurses who helped this woman deliver her child had no idea what they were getting themselves into when they were entrusted with this case. Thus, it is said that the size of the baby shocked the entire medical staff.

As plump as this baby might be, he is by no means the heaviest baby to have until now been born in the world. Thus, Guinness World Records says that the world's heaviest baby ever was born in Ohio, US, in 1879. He tipped the scale at nearly 24 pounds (almost 11 kilograms) and passed away shortly after delivery.

Specialists say that, more often than not, babies come to weigh much more than they should at the time of birth due to various medical complications. This also explains why mortality rate is fairly high among infants who pack one too many pounds at delivery.
