AegisLabs released a report that sums up the distribution of malware types in 2011 and the numbers are worryingly high.

Most of the 14 million unique pieces of malware detected on a global level were Trojans, their numbers representing close to 65% of all threats.

Around 11% were packed malware, totaling 1.5 million samples, closely followed by malicious elements spread with the aid of adult websites and services.

Backdoor threats occupy the forth position with 5%, the remaining percentage being covered by worms, viruses, adware, hoaxes, exploit, rootkits and hack tools.

When it comes to malicious URLs, AegisLab detected 163,769 new domains, 38% of which were download sites and the rest hopping websites.

The United States tops the list with more than half of the malicious URLs, followed by South Korea, and China. With less than 2.5% of the malicious domain distribution we have the British Virgin Islands, Czech Republic, Russia, Germany, Canada, Brazil and Ukraine.
