An angler has captured a mako shark weighing 1,323.5 pounds (600 kg) off the coast of Huntington Beach, California, and it could prove to be a record-breaker.

The shark was bagged by a fisherman from Mesquite, Texas in two and a half gripping hours. Jason Johnston literally feared for his life, as the shark dived out of the water five times. It reached distances of 20 to 25 feet (6 - 7.6 meters) in the air.

"It was the scariest thing I've ever witnessed in my life. [...] This thing was a beast," Johnston tells NBC Los Angeles.

The monster fish measures 144 inches (366 cm) and the angler describes it as a "beast." The catch has drawn controversy, as the capture was caught on tape while shooting for a reality show.
