While Samsung Galaxy S is currently the fastest selling mobile phone in South Korea, Apple's iPhone 4 seems set to catch up. Made available for pre-order on Wednesday in the country, the high-end Apple device already registered impressive interest from users in South Korea, with over 130,000 pre-orders placed in about 13 hours.

According to wireless carrier KT, which has exclusivity on the device in the country, the first 60,000 pre-orders were placed before 9:45 a.m. yesterday.

For the time being, the wireless carrier did not unveil specific info on when the device would be put on sale, but rumor has it that the move should be made sometime in September.

“We will make utmost efforts for the launch and delivery of the new model,” Pyo Hyun-myung, president of the mobile business group at KT, stated, according to a recent article on Korea Herald.

The wireless carrier also announced that it experienced some issues with its servers on yesterday, as they got overloaded with people trying to place orders for the Apple handset.

Apple launched its iPhone in South Korea at the end of 2009. The iPhone 3GS was brought to the country at that time.

For comparison, the previous iPhone model registered a number of 14,500 pre-orders during the first day, while hitting 65,000 after five days.

Since the handset's release about nine months ago, KT managed to move only a number of around 850,000 iPhone 3GS units.

While the figure might seem impressive for a small market like South Korea, it fades out when compared to the sales of Android-based Samsung Galaxy S, which sold over 800k units in about 55 days from launch.

However, with such impressive pre-order levels right from day one, chances are that iPhone 4 would manage to catch up with Samsung's flagship model in the not too far future. Keep an eye on this space to learn more on this.
