The first-generation iPhone was not exactly the success that Apple had hoped for in the UK. But now, with the announcement of the iPhone 3G, it seems that British users are much more interested in Apple's handset, as no less than 130,000 people have expressed their desire to buy an iPhone 3G.

According to the online edition of Telegraph, since O2 (UK's largest mobile operator and exclusive iPhone carrier) has announced the upcoming availability of iPhone 3G, the above-mentioned number of users have pre-registered for a brand new touchscreen handset. As compared to the interest shown by the British consumers for the first iPhone, the 130,000 requests, made in less than two weeks, represent a huge increase in popularity for Apple's handset.

Weighing 133 grams and measuring 115.5 x 62.1 x 12.3 millimeters, iPhone 3G is a bit bigger than the first iPhone, but it still keeps the overall slim aspect. Moreover, since it has a slightly revamped design, it looks better than the original handset. Plus, it comes in two colors, black and white, so that users can get the chance to buy an iPhone that really suits their tastes. The new features that iPhone 3G brings include HSDPA connectivity, built-in GPS, App Store and support for Microsoft Exchange.

Starting July 11, O2 will offer the iPhone 3G even for free, but only with expensive data plans and contract agreements for at least two years, which will drain a lot of money out of the pockets of those who buy the smartphone. Otherwise, the retail price of the device will be around 390 GBP (500 Euros or $775) - for the 8GB version.

Apple announced that it planned to sell at least 8 million new iPhones worldwide by the end of 2008 and if the users' interest is as high as in the UK, the Cupertino-based company might see its wish become reality even before the year's end.
