A 12-year-old boy was arrested in California on suspicion of having stabbed his 8-year-old sister Leila Fowler to death last month. He also lied to investigators by telling them he’d seen an intruder run away from the house.

Leila was killed when she was left home alone with her brother last month.

He called the cops and told them a tall man with grey hair had broken into the house, stabbed her repeatedly and then fled.

The announcement by Calaveras County Sheriff that the 12-year-old boy had been arrested in connection with the gruesome murder shocked the entire community.

Though living in fear since the killing because of the so-called intruder, knowing that a boy did it did not offer any comfort, especially since they’d seen him front and center at his sister’s vigil, organized by the entire community.

Police refuse to say what led them to arrest the boy, but he’s being charged with homicide. If found guilty, he will probably be out by the time he’s 25, because he can’t be tried as an adult.

The investigation is still ongoing.
