That makes 22.5 million out of a total 182.7 million

People might not have caught on, but analysts sure have: the market for ultra-portable laptops grew by 100% in 2013, year-over-year.

That's right, that particular segment doubled in terms of shipments, reaching 22.5 million. That's what ABI Research found anyhow.

That means that 12.3% of all notebooks shipped in 2013 were ultra-portable ones. 22.5 million versus 182.7 million.

Apple's MacBook Air, running Mac OS, accounted for the majority of those shipments.

Also, as curious as it sounds, Ultrabooks might not really contribute all that much in upcoming years, because 2-in-1 devices (tablet-laptop hybrids, with or without docks, or with convertible designs of various types) have started to encroach on their territory.

Since Ultraportables are finally becoming affordable, shipments can only go up from here.
