An 11-year-old has been arrested for coming to school armed with a gun and about 400 rounds of ammunition.

The incident took place in Washington state, and authorities were alerted by the boy's mother. According to Q13 Fox, he was arrested at Frontier Middle School in Vancouver.

Police were dispatched to the scene at 9:20 a.m., and they recovered ammo, several knives and a handgun. The school was on lockdown for two hours as authorities searched the campus.

The principal and assistant principal held the boy until authorities arrived. An empty .22 caliber semi-automatic handgun was found in his pocket, as were two loaded .22 caliber magazines.

“An 11-year-old male, who is student at the school, was interviewed by detectives and subsequently arrested for one count of attempted murder and booked this evening into the Clark County Juvenile Detention Center,” a release by the Vancouver Police Department reads.

There is no information on whether or not threats have been made. According to NBC, the child told officers that a classmate had called his friend gay. He mentioned that a voice in his head told him to kill the other boy.

“[He] stated a voice told him killing [another student] was a good idea; however he planned to just shoot [the student] in the arm and then shoot himself in the head.

“After making theses (sic) admissions he asked to speak to his mother and his request was granted,” a police document reveals.

Authorities credited the mother and teachers for their efforts in preventing a tragedy.

“[We] believe it’s reasonable to conclude based on the above mentioned information that [the boy] acted with premeditated intent to cause the death of another.

“He brought a firearm to the school with bullets, but failed to carry the act out due to his mother’s willingness to report him as a danger to the school and because of the swift action taken by school administrators and VPD officers,” the police report reads.
