I'm afraid I have some bad news from Florida: it appears that 11 more short-finned pilot whales have lost their lives after becoming stranded in the Everglades.

Their bodies were discovered this past Sunday roughly 6 miles north of Sugarloaf Key and, according to Daily Mail, evidence indicates that the marine mammals were part of a pod that was first observed in these waters only a few days ago.

As previously reported, local authorities first became aware of the fact that a total of 51 pilot whales were stranded in Florida's Everglades last week, on Wednesday.

Since then, 4 of the marine mammals have had to be put to sleep, and 7 died of natural causes. The 11 whales whose bodies were discovered on Sunday bring the death toll to 22.

For the time being, the rest of the pod is still unaccounted for. Wildlife researchers and rescuers hope that the animals have somehow managed to work their way back to the ocean.
