Far Cry 4 is one of the biggest video game launches of this fall and the development team working on it has already confirmed that the game will run at 1080p and 60 frames per second on both the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4, but at least one of the leaders of the studio believes that the core game mechanics and experience are more important than technical details.

Alex Hutchinson, tells the Official Xbox Magazine that he believes we live in a period when gamers are having fun playing retro pixel-based titles, which means that they are no longer focused on what title can deliver the best graphical spectacle.

He states, “With the 4K TVs and things - somebody was telling me that with a 4K TV, to even see it, your living room has to be big enough to sit like 12 feet from the screen. I don't know the exact numbers, but it starts to get a little crazy. I'm just in it for the experience, I'll play a SNES game if it's cool.”

To the developer, a focus on resolution and frame rate for the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 means that teams are spending less time working on introducing innovation to the core mechanics, which can lead to a long-term stagnation for the industry.

Active and passive fan voices

Alex Hutchinson believes that, at the moment, those who are focused on the debate over resolutions tend to be a minority of gamers that is very vocal on forums and social media, while a silent majority wants to play titles like Far Cry 4, Assassin’s Creed Unity or Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare to see what they have to offer.

He adds, “We create these weird echo chambers for those issues, and sometimes I wonder, I don't think this is real.”

Far Cry 4 is set to be launched in late November and will take gamers to a fictional kingdom in the Himalayas, called Kyrat, which is under the domination of a sadistic and powerful dictator called Pagan Min.

The player has to carefully explore the world, support rebel operations and engage in spectacular gunfights in order to liberate the country.

Far Cry 4 looks spectacular from the videos and the screenshots that Ubisoft has revealed so far, and the game also includes a Season Pass which will allow gamers to take on a mission in which they hunt Yetis.
