While Intel's Wireless Display technology has not really managed to take off just yet, it really seems that things are about to take a whole different turn in the future, as a recent filling with the FCC by Netgear reveals.
As you might remember, back at CES 2010, Intel revealed a very interesting technology called
Wireless Display (or WiDi, for short), that allowed owners of the specific notebooks incorporating this wireless streaming tech to output 720p video to an HDTV set, without employing any wires.
Naturally, the solution required a receiver attached to the HDTV and Netgear was one of the first (and only) companies to offer such an accessory.
In fact, we've had the chance to
check out the WiDi solution and the adapter from Netgear back at CeBIT 2010, and found it to be quite a promising streaming technology, provided the companies managed to up the resolution to 1080p for full HD multimedia playback.
However, it seems that Netgear is ready with a successor to their original streaming solution, since a recent FCC filling, uncovered by Crunchgear, brought to our attention the Push 2 TV, a device that will leverage the aforementioned wireless technology developed by Intel, but in the same time manage to upgrade the resolution to 1080p.
After this upgrade, WiDi really becomes interesting, since Netgear 's Push 2 TV will practically allow users to get rid of streaming media players, all the necessary playback being done right from the notebook.
The device from Netgear comes with HDMI and RCA connectors, meaning that it should work quite well with older TV sets as well.
Of course, it's still a bit early to say whether the Netgear adapter, coupled with WiDi technology, will really have a major impact, but if Intel sets its mind to making this solution popular, then that might certainly be the case.
