If in the 2005 battle for the supremacy of the online maps, Google was the first search engine to offer such a product, now it's the Mountain View company's turn to come up with a service which is already present in the competition's portfolio.
Google announced yesterday the tests for the Google Page Creator, a new service that allows users to create their own web pages, something similar to Yahoo's GeoCities.
According
to the announcement made by the company, users won't have to download a separate application, an Internet browser being the only prerequisite; the pages created with the Google Page Creator will include images, different text styles and links to other sites.
In addition, the company mentions that the pages are easy to create, no HTML or programming skills being required; and that's because the service is based on the What you see is what you get" concept.
For the advanced users, Google has also included the possibility to edit HTML code.
Although both GeoCities and Google Page Creator are free of charge, there is a major difference between them and that resides in the storage capacity available to users, Yahoo offering 15MB, and Google 100MB.
In order to benefit from the service, you have to access the www.pages.google.com address and to enter the tests. Unfortunately, Google has announced that due to heavy demand, they are unable to offer new accounts. However, you can use your Gmail account to enter a waiting list.
