100" LCD may actually turn into a product line

Earlier this year a joined venture between LG Electronics and Phillips has shown the first live test with their largest LCD ever. And when I say that, I mean it was and still is the largest in the world when it comes to LCD screens. The only display that is slightly bigger that this one is Panasonic's 103 HD plasma.

The 2.2x1.2 display meters uses 6.22 million pixels and has a response time of only 5ns so don't panic if you can't help but declare yourself amazed. 3000:1 is the contrast ratio and the LCD also comes with a viewing angle of 180 degrees. Due to the enormous size but also to the new technologies regarding LCDs, the display can output a maximum of 1.07 billion colors that translate into sharp colors and crispness.

At first, due to the manufacturing process, LCDs were aimed at the small display market while plasmas were suited for screens larger than 40". It now seems that the tables have turned in favor of the LCD, mostly because the LCD share has increased with the time, allowing more money to be turned into research funds.

As for the availability of such a product, LG & Phillips haven't tried to release it into the market yet. It seems that they have the capabilities to mass produce it but they want to test the market first, by introducing "smaller" 60-82 LCDs, similar to Samsung's products. But as the idea has already crossed my mind once, I can't help but wonder how a 100" display would look in my living-room.
