ABI Research has just revealed the results of a recent study coming from them. It looks like year 2008 will be a great one for boosting the touchscreen handset production. More than 100 million such devices are expected to ship until the end of
next year.

Apple's iPhone is surely responsible for a great amount of touchscreen enabled phones of this kind, as this feature was not all that popular until this handset's release. Only during this year, a large number of evolved mobile phones have been equipped with this technology, many times also giving up the classic keypad.

Touchscreen enabled smartphones interact easier with their user, a major advantage when compared with previous devices. "Handsets with intuitive user interfaces allow quick and easy access to various applications and services and can result in higher ARPUs for mobile operators by generating greater usage of their value-added services. Mobile operators are therefore keen to promote and market handsets with good UI on their networks", stated ABI Research industry analyst.

ABI Research's prediction is even more optimistic on a long term, as the researches consider that more than 500 million handsets using this technology will be shipped in 2012. The devices will reach a better balance between interface and functionality, which should drive their popularity even further.

At this time, a great number of mobile phones using touchscreen are available, such as Apple iPhone, the LG Prada, the HTC Touch and the Ultra-Smart F700 from Samsung, as well as the P990, M600 and W950 handsets from Sony Ericsson, along with some other Chinese ones that copy them.

The technology is seen as a modern and evolved one, which makes it best to use in evolved smartphones that have the resources for supporting such a soliciting feature. It comes as no surprise to find out that it will expand even more in the future, although the number of 100 million only next year is quite impressive, especially if thinking on how many such devices were out on the market before the start of this year.
