WhatsApp has become one of the top mobile applications and is installed on millions of devices out there, and a new survey conducted by GlobalWebIndex (GWI) reveals quite impressive figures.

WhatsApp is believed to have around 1 billion users, with the latest data provided by the company in April pointing to a user base of 800 million, and according to the aforementioned study, 73 percent of them are running Android.

At this point, Android is said to be the number one mobile platform across the globe, and these charts also reflect in these WhatsApp figures, so it's not really surprising that so many people are using Google's mobile platform to chat with contacts.

But as far as Windows Phone is concerned, the numbers are obviously lower. Only 10 percent of the WhatsApp users have Microsoft's mobile platforms, which is actually more than the global market share of the operating system, currently at around 3 percent.

WhatsApp on Windows Phone

As compared to other companies that have shown no interest in Windows Phone (including Google), WhatsApp rolled out improvements to its application designed to run on Microsoft's platform at a really fast pace.

WhatsApp Web, for instance, which allows you to chat with contacts from the web browser of your PC by syncing with the phone where the app is actually installed, debuted on Windows Phone earlier this year, but on iOS devices, it only arrived a couple of weeks ago.

What's more, updates that are designed to squash bugs and make the application run more smoothly on Windows Phone arrive much more often than on other platforms and that's exactly what Microsoft needs right now: companies that are ready to invest in Windows Phone and bring their best software on its platform.

The company hopes to see this becoming a trend when Windows 10 Mobile lands, which, according to sources, should happen in October this year.
