Celebrities can – and do – set fashion trends. This year is no different, as they act as the ambassadors of designers, bringing their creations to the streets. Below are the top 10 items that are a must for every woman out there for 2010.

InStyle Magazine spoke to Nicole Chavez, the stylist who has worked with the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Rachel Bilson and Kristen Bell, and came up with a top 10 of items that shouldn’t miss from a woman’s wardrobe.

At number one is, of course, the black blazer, also very popular these days as the boyfriend’s jacket. It is versatile and can spice up an otherwise rather boring outfit – if used wisely, of course.

“A tailored blazer is classic, feminine and looks great on all body types. Pair it with anything: jeans, little dresses, trousers, skirts. Make sure to find one that fits you well and accentuates your waist - you don’t want it to look like it’s swallowing you!” Chavez explains.

Another hot trend this year is animal prints. Because not all of us can work such an item, the stylist recommends a leopard-print scarf, which we can use with a monochrome outfit to make it stand out from the crowd.

Next up on the list are a pair of red flats and a striped shirt, both of which are trendy and equally glamorous because they’re the prerogative of someone with a strong personality and, most importantly, courage to not be ordinary.

Accessories are also very important in 2010, which is why we should also invest in a statement necklace. It doesn’t have to be pricey or valuable: it just has to have that little extra something.

“I believe in having basics in your closet and playing with your accessories. The statement necklace can make a simple outfit look strong and feminine,” Chavez explains.

Of course, the little black dress (LBD) couldn’t have possibly been left out of the top, as it remains a must-have for all women, regardless of their age or the season when they plan on wearing it.

A pair of black opaque tights is another must-have. “A great pair of tights can make your legs look slimmer and help you get away with wearing a dress that’s a little too short. Double them up for a more opaque look – and to keep you warm in the winter!” the stylist recommends.

A gold watch (worn loose to resemble more a bracelet than a watch) and a classic cut black trench coat are also very helpful in making an outfit more elegant and stylish.

Last on the list (but definitely not least) are the mommy jeans. “This is a flattering shape for most body types. Pair them with platforms or wedges to get extra height while keeping the look casual and comfortable,” Chavez says.
