Almost every digital camera comes with a built-in flash that allows you to take pictures even in low-light conditions, whether you have a fast aperture lens or not.

This might do the trick for casual photographers who are not looking for complex compositions and just want to immortalize the moment, regardless of how the picture turns out. On the other side, aspiring photographers quickly learn that on-camera flash is kind of obsolete and can't offer you the power and versatility of a hotshoe-mounted flashgun.

DigitalRev has recently posted a new video on its YouTube channel that will help you understand the terminology behind hotshoe-mounted flashes and will also give you a few tips on what to look out for if you decide to purchase your first flash.

The video covers subjects as TTL, manual mode, recycle time, guide number, wireless options, durability, as well as other important tips that will help you choose a flash perfect for any type of photography. Check out the video above for more info.
