The Linux Foundation has released a few interesting statistics about the contributors to the Linux kernel, showing in fact that this is the largest collaboration project on the planet.

The biggest contributor to the Linux kernel is now Red Hat, and it's followed closely by Intel and Texas Instruments.

“More developers than ever are contributing to Linux. Nearly 10,000 developers from more than 1,000 companies have contributed to the Linux kernel since tracking began in 2005. Just since the last report, more than 1,100 developers from 225 companies have contributed to the kernel. And, Linux kernel 3.10 saw the most developer contributions ever,” reads the announcement from The Linux Foundation.

Also, the rate of development has increased significantly, and the release cycle between versions has decreased from 80 to 70 days, on average.
