A 1-year-old boy has been injured during a shooting in Richmond, California, when a stray bullet entered his neck.

The shootout took place in the Iron Triangle area, on MacDonald Avenue at 1:15 p.m. Thursday, March 28. Father Rosshan Ali tells ABC affiliate KGO-TV that the boy's grandparents were watching him at the time of the shooting.

"This shouldn't happen, my son didn't do nothing to nobody, I didn't do nothing to nobody," Ali said. "I go to work and come home you know. And it's not my fault I live in a certain area," he says.

The child has been transported to Children's Hospital in Oakland where he underwent a successful surgical procedure. The shooting also registered a male victim in his 20s who was riding a bike in the area.

The man was struck when an unidentified gunman opened fire on the street, and he is currently being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The boy was being held in the arms of his grandparents inside their apartment building when he was injured, while his mother was in the bathroom.

"As far as I know my mom was inside watching him. [...] Like I said, my fiancé came home from work. She was in the shower, and next thing you know, shots fired and my mom grabbed him and ran into the kitchen.

"Ah, they gotta get more stricter gun laws. It's not right how people just get their hands on weapons. It actually sucks," Ali notes.

"You have a 1-year-old child who was literally in the arms of the grandparents. [...] They are feeding him and bullets come into the house.

"I am sickened, I am appalled. This is completely unacceptable and it is our highest priority to catch those who are involved," Richmond Chief of Police Chris Magnus comments.
