From Microsoft

Undoubtedly, it has been a slow month for Microsoft, considering just the two security bulletins released earlier this week. With just a couple of patches designed to resolve just as many vulnerabilities, it’s no wonder that the May 2010 Security Release ISO Image weighs in at just 250.2 MB. Fact is that this month’s ISO image brings to the table only the May 11th, 2010 Windows patch and nothing more. The download barely jumps over the 250 MB mark simply because the Redmond company is providing the security update in all supported languages.

MS10-030 “is rated Critical for Microsoft Outlook Express on all supported editions of Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003; and for Windows Mail on all supported editions of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. This security update is rated Important for Windows Live Mail on all supported editions of Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2; and for Windows Mail on all supported editions of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2,” Microsoft stated.

Neither Windows 7 nor Windows Server 2008 R2 contains Windows Mail by default. Following the release of Windows Vista, Microsoft stripped various components of the operating system and made them available in the Cloud via the Windows Live Essentials package. Windows 7 customers that want Windows Live Mail as their default client need to download it and install it on their own.

“This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in Outlook Express, Windows Mail, and Windows Live Mail. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if a user visits a malicious e-mail server. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the local user. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights,” the Redmond company added.
