VLC for Windows Phone arrived in the store only a few months ago with the beta tag, but since this is one of the most popular media players on pretty much every platform out there, users of Microsoft’s mobile operating system rushed to download it on their devices from the first days of availability.

VideoLAN developers have revealed today that VLC for Windows Phone has reached an important milestone, as the number of downloads in the first two and a half months in the store has surpassed 1 million.

Other specifics are not yet available, but VideoLAN developer Thomas Nigro says that the number of downloads on Windows Phone compares “pretty well” to those on other platforms, such as iOS and Android.

VLC for Windows Phone first launched with a beta tag but reached the stable stage of development shortly after that, so it’s now supposed to provide a much more reliable experience on any Windows Phone device on the market.

New update coming this week

VideoLAN has also confirmed that a new update for VLC on Windows Phone will be released soon, but it has provided no information on what it could bring and when exactly it’s supposed to arrive. We should expect it this week, Thomas Nigro has added, without further details.

VLC media player is one of the best applications currently on the market and it’s available on pretty much all platforms out there, so it can be installed on desktop computers running Windows, Linux, or Mac OS X, but also on mobile devices powered by Windows Phone, iOS, or Android.

It offers support for a wide variety of formats and comes with clean and very easy-to-use interface, so it can be safely used by beginners and more advanced users alike.
