1 INTEL = 2 AMDs

One Conroe beats two Opterons

The HP xw9400 workstation was tested with two Opteron 2200se processors running at 2.8 GHz, as well as with one Conroe XE. (SAS Drive and Quadro video cards were involved in the process).
The results? It seems obvious who is going to be the next leader of this segment. It dominates most benchmarks, with the two Opterons barely holding there.

The test was conducted by Digital Video Editing, at their Midwest Test Facility labs, and they found out more than you would expect from such a comparison. "The single processor beats the two dual-core Opterons in tests one through six of After Effects suite of benchmarks, encompassing bitmap rendering, Adobe Illustrator graphics rendering, video composite and animation projects, as well as a virtual set. For these tasks, the Intel Core 2 Extreme chip will be a faster performer for you."

However, this HP workstation, with its quick NVIDIA nForce PCI Express Pro chipset and two dual-core Opterons, outperforms the Intel Core 2 Extreme in key benchmarks. For example, it scores a whopping 1554 on the CineBench rendering benchmark, beating the 903 score turned in by the Core 2 Extreme machine (keep in mind, though, it has a 3.04x multiprocessor speedup, compared to the Core 2 Duo's 1.86x multiprocessor speedup - there are two cores less). It finishes the TotalBenchmark Comp 2 - a comprehensive set of Adobe After Effects tasks - at a quicker 630 seconds compared to the 781 seconds of the Core 2 Duo. The Opteron wins the CPU section of the 3DMark 2006 test, too, at 3697 to the Core 2 Extreme's 2551. And finally, the Opteron 2220 SE takes the crown in the newest benchmark we've begun to use, the PCMark, at 8144 compared to the 7247 of the Core 2 Extreme.

The conclusion is that for now, "the fastest Opteron processors are nowhere near as quick as Intel's latest Core 2 technology. Just one of the dual-core Core 2 Extreme chips can beat two of the dual-core Opterons in many tests, where their dual/dual-core Core 2 technology has the potential to show these Opterons who's boss."
