Google’s Android operating system has managed to storm the mobile market, becoming the leading one in only several years, and it seems that it still has a lot to offer.

In fact, Google Chairman Eric Schmidt told AllThingsD that Android activations will grow to more than one billion by next year.

There are around half a billion such devices already in use around the world, and it should not be that hard for Google to double the number, especially since there are over 1.3 million activations each day.

However, it remains to be seen whether the company will indeed manage to top the billion mark so fast, especially with Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform expected to get a boost with the launch of Windows Phone 8, and with RIM preparing the launch of its BlackBerry 10 platform and new handsets.
