Always the active pioneer in its field, Toshiba has just announced that it's expanding its small form factor hard disk drives with three new high-capacity, high-performance SATA HDDs, including the industry's first 250GB 1.8-inch HDD. You got it right, your future laptop could be featured with one of these just-introduced, small-sized SATA hard disk drives, providing you with an impressive 250GB of storage space.

On a market where almost every manufacturer of storage products is considering the adoption of the next-generation flash-based SSD solutions, Toshiba continues to pioneer the small form factor hard disk drives technology, and is now ready to provide its customers with new high-capacity models. Ultimately, these will end up in some of the upcoming portable computer systems, including here the highly successful netbooks.

Toshiba's third-generation of 5400RPM SATA 1.8-inch HDDs also features a 120GB and a 160GB model, which, together with the 250GB version, boast a free-fall sensor option that enhances the protection level for a user's private data. The newly announced products are a statement for the company's continuous search for higher areal densities and increased storage capacities in smaller form factors. In addition, Toshiba's new 250GB 1.8-inch HDD (MK2529GSC) has been designed to achieve a new low of 0.0016 watts/GB in energy consumption efficiency, which represents an improvement of 43%.

The new hard disk models come approximately one week after Toshiba introduced the 1.8-inch 240GB PATA hard drives. “Toshiba's dedication and focus on 1.8-inch HDD product development over the past decade has enabled us to continually drive innovation in this form factor - from robust capacity introductions to improved performance and power efficiency," said Maciek Brzeski, vice president of marketing at Toshiba Storage Device Division. "Thanks to these continual advancements, 1.8-inch HDDs have become an ideal form factor for the digital world, where the ability to handle rich digital content in a mobile environment is king .”

So far, the company hasn't revealed the pricing and availability details for the new 2.5-inch SATA HDDs with 250GB of storage space.
