1,000 Days until Windows XP End of Life

In 1,000 days Microsoft will pull the plug on the operating system which it released back in 2001 and that still dominates the OS market.

The aging platform is already a decade old, almost, and will still pile up another three years, but come 2014, the Redmond company will discontinue all support for Windows XP.

XP is even now running on what some might interpret as borrowed time, since the software giant already retired Mainstream Support for the operating system.

On April 8, 2014, Microsoft will also no longer provide Extended Support for XP, which gives users little chance but to make the jump to another OS.

“On April 8, 2014, security patches and hotfixes for all versions of Windows XP will no longer be available. So bottom line, PC’s running Windows XP will be vulnerable to security threats,” revealed Microsoft’s Stephen L Rose.

“Furthermore, many third party software providers are not planning to extend support for their applications running on Windows XP, which translates to even more complexity, security risks, and ultimately, added management costs for your IT department if you’re still managing Windows XP environments.”

End of support is nothing short of a death sentence for XP. Make no mistake about it, XP can be considered obsolete even today, despite the fact that it’s still undisputed king of the OS market.

My personal prediction is that XP will lose its crown soon enough, even ahead of Windows 8’s launch, to Windows 7.

For those users that want to stick to Windows, the only viable alternative to XP for the time being is Windows 7. Even by the most optimistic estimates, Windows 8, the next major iteration of Windows, is approximately a year away.

Service Pack 3 (SP3) was the last upgrade provided to 32-bit (x86) XP, and similarly, SP2 was the last for 64-bit (x64) flavor of the platform. Microsoft will no longer release any additional service packs for Windows XP.

Well, what exactly does this mean?? "On April 8, 2014, security patches and hotfixes for all versions of Windows XP will no longer be available."

Does it mean that people who install Windows XP SP3 after this date will not be able to download patches released prior to April 8 2014? Or simply the fact that no future patches will be released after this date?

you will be able to download updates already released but you won't get any more new updates after that date.

XP will not die. The bulk of security is in security software not MS updates. Some vendors will continue support for another 10 years after end of support.

ReactOS is Windows XP reborn.

You Fail to see the light.

XP will die. If you will use pirated xp after Extended support, it will make PC , more vulnerable

I can't understand why anyone would still prefer to use windows xp? It's like living in the dark ages and refusing to move forward with the advancement of technology.

i still use xp and i love it! im so use to it. i tried vista and hated it so for them to be ending XP support really sucks. Theyre pushing us to move on to the newer operating systems..

Windows Support has got to end some time. They can't expect to support a program forever...

Think a bit wider. The average XP user surf's around, Hotmail's and Facebook's his peanut away and so on. Many users, such as myself use multiple operating systems for different reasons.

XP has worked great in the studio running VST instruments, DAW's and plugins for audio and video recording and editing projects.

Some of the hardware, such as sound cards for example, can't run or perform perfectly on any other operating system other than XP.

So therefore, XP does have a timeless power and quality to it. Operating systems are just part of the tools used in many pro setups. To this day, XP still does what it needs to do in these environments and will stay in use as long as it does.

An operating system is not a fashion statement. Unless, of course, you do nothing but spend time skinning it while you're posting your latest "Twitter" or "Facebook" announcement to your buddies.

Get to work. Find something else to do.

Yes, get the whole world using their OS and dump it for $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
Its time to move to Apple!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comment #10.1 by: Dinochrome on 18 Nov 2011, 14:09 GMT

And that company doesn't change OS-es? Do I hear someone whisper OS9?

Btw. I believe that Apple also charges for their OS. Might be wrong ofcourse...

Duh.

Actually Apple OSX has a shorter lifespan then Windows. OSX 10.4 Tiger had an entire lifespan of two years, then all support was pulled, the API for programmers was updated so no new software works with it, and even flash support was pulled last year. So half of the macs four years old are a security risk to even get online.

Yes and to the normal End User (not all you geeks) every bump up since OSX 10.1, has been an "update" not a "new version" trying to force slow machines and invasive policies on them. Familiarity. Period.

Mac OS X, 5 site license for a full blown OSX, (ahhhem, no 29 diff flavors to choose from), no discrimination here, everyone is 1st class, is around 50 bucks. Windows 7 Enterprise, is 300-400 bucks for ONE license! Ooops, you are poor and want to upgrade? Windows 7 Starter for you. 3rd class.

Are some of you on Planet Earth?

Besides not getting security fixes, what are the implications for my small business? Will other App providers (Salesforce, Amazon, Google, etc.) STOP supporting XP as a client? What kinds of problems will I face assuming I can maintain network security?

Thanks

You would need to contact those vendors to see about continuing support for XP, and plan accordingly.
