'The Best Martial Arts Film about Elephants'

'The Protector', a must-see but only if you're a fan

If you liked 'Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior', you are sure to love the latest movie starring none other than the brand new presence on the scene, Tony Jaa. 'The Protector' is, as some of the reviewers labeled it, 'the best martial arts film about elephants yet made'.

Kham (Jaa) was brought up by his family in the true spirit of the Jaturongkabaht, the King's Bodyguards, who raise and protect His Majesty's elephants, a symbol of power and their favorite weapon on the battle field. But, when the last two remaining animals are stolen and taken to Australia and Kham's father brutally killed, the young warrior must embark on a one-man journey... to kick some ass!

Because, that's what this movie is all about. We see Jaa kicking asses and breaking bones all over the place, in the most unexpected settings and, at the same time, in those we were already familiar with from the earlier movies of a much younger Jet Li.

And our hero is not at all picky when it comes to knocking some bloke off his feet: he will fight street gang members to the highest ranking officials of the Sydney police force with equal pleasure and ability. The entire movie is an 'incredibly violent ballet', with Jaa performing all the fight scenes without ropes and with the same agility that he also displayed in 'Ong-Bak'.

The fight scenes are incendiary, despite the obvious use of clichés and the limited plot and character development. They make the movie good, the rest of the scenes being just something like a pause, allowing the viewer to breathe for a second before the next fight begins.

In fewer words, 'The Protector' could be described: fight, snap, crack, no plot, no character, a lot of things happening by accident. But all of the above can be easily overlooked just for the sake of the first one. Basically, it's a movie one watches just for fun, with no depth whatsoever, and for the beauty of Jaa's body and his movements.

If you've got some 90 minutes to spare and if you like action movies (in the most narrow acceptance of the term), 'The Protector' is something that you should see. And here is the trailer for it, just so you have an overall impression of what we're talking about.
