'Stargate SG-1' Slams the Door on Its Way Out

The cast of 'Stargate SG-1' might see themselves jobless if another television channel doesn't step in to take the series where the UK network will leave it. Representatives from the Sci Fi Channel just announced that they will no longer broadcast a potential 11th season.

On Friday, the show aired its 200th episode (out of 215), thus becoming the longest-lived US sci-fi series in the history (10 years), topping 'The X Files', 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' and 'Star Trek: Deep Space Nine'.

Representatives from the British channel offered no reason for the canceling of 'Stargate', but just said: 'Having achieved so much over the course of the past 10 years, Sci Fi believes that the time is right to make this season [its] last on the channel'. 'SG-1' will be replaced though by another series from the 'Stargate' franchise, 'Stargate: Atlantis'.

A spokesperson for MGM said that, despite the network's decision to kill off the series, the studio will continue to work on the franchise. It was implied that the decision might have been the consequence of the recent fall in audience ratings that 'SG-1' suffered, while 'Atlantis' proved to be more on the public's liking. Plus, many episodes from 'Stargate: SG-1' are now available on iTunes for download, a thing that could be considered as another good reason for Sci Fi to cancel the show.
