In what is one of the most ironical pieces of news to hit lately, the restless tech-savvy guys at the iPhone Dev Team have achieved a new milestone, booting Linux on Apple's iPhone.

A post on the team's site says:

“Linux, here we come! This week’s funday is today!  Devteam member planetbeing has done a phenomenal job reverse engineering Apple’s hardware drivers and now, for the first time ever, Linux is available on the iPhone and first-gen iPods.”

Another post, signed planetbeing, reads: “I'm pleased to announce that the Linux 2.6 kernel has been ported to Apple's iPhone platform, with support for the first and second generation iPhones, as well as the first generation iPod touch. This is a rough first draft of the port, and many drivers are still missing, but it's enough that a real alternative operating system is running on the iPhone.”

The iPhone Dev Team is actively working to get Google’s Android mobile operating system up and running on the iPhone. To do so, the team says more workforce is needed. As such, anyone with experience in the field is encouraged to get in touch with the team.

One of the team's latest achievements concerns a certain iPhone OS 2.2, which has been pwned and owned by the team's PwnageTool and QuickPwn hacking tools. Read more on this here.

Video, downloads, and instructions are all available for those who wish to boot Linux on their handsets. However, Softpedia doesn't condone jailbreaking / unlocking your iPhone / iPod touch or any other device. Using hacks may render your device unusable or may considerably reduce the quality of your experience using the respective device. If you choose to download and install the PwnageTool, you do it at your own risk.
