It has been a while since the popular 'Halo' game series were said to hit the big screen but technical difficulties always made that practically impossible. Now, the director Neill Blomkamp, specialized in commercials and TV series, has accepted to make his big screen debut with 'Halo'.
The game centers on the story of Master Chief and Cortana, engaged in a life and death confrontation with the alien force the Flood. The ultimate goal of the main characters is, of course, that of saving the earth from the alien invasion.
The screenplay for the movie has been penned by Alex Garland, the same man who wrote the '28 Days Later' script, and it is executive produced by Peter Jackson. The newly arrived director is already famous for his ground breaking commercial for Citroen-Alive with technology, which brought him a Clio Award and a Visual Effects Society Award. In 2004, he received further recognition, by being nominated 'One of the Top Five Directors to Watch' at First Boards Awards.
Blomkamp's credentials also include one Emmy nomination for his work on one episode from James Cameron's 'Dark Angel'. All in all, considering that the producers are Mary Parent, Scott Stuber and Peter Schlessel, the prospects for 'Halo' are definitely looking good.
'As a gaming fan, I'm excited to bring 'Halo''s premise, action and settings to the screen, with all the specificity and reality today's technology can provide. With Neill on board, I'm even more excited by the potential of this project', Peter Jackson said.
The entire film will be shot in Wellington, New Zealand and it has already been scheduled for a 2008 release. The only thing uncertain yet is whether it will feature actors or animated characters, like its 'Final Fantasy' predecessor did.
