The star-studded musical 'Dreamgirls' premiered in New York last night and, despite all the broad smiles and kind words from every cast member, the press has already begun to start throwing questions around concerning the rivalry between two of the leading ladies.
The point is that, when it began shooting, Beyonce Knowles was considered to be The Star. Sure, other big names, like that of Oscar-winning Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy were not for one second ignored, but they were definitely overshadowed.
As production was underway, word got out that the once 'American Idol' castoff, Jennifer Hudson, was in fact the real star of the show and that multiple Grammy-winner Beyonce was a bit jealous, a thing that also showed in all the interviews she gave for the promotion of the movie.
TMZ and other media outlets quote the singer as saying that she didn't even need to play the star in 'Dreamgirls', because she is already one. Talk about being humble or modest! '[I] knew that the character that I played wasn't the star... I'm already a star. I already have nine Grammys. Everyone knows I can sing', Beyonce said in reference to Jennifer and her onscreen persona, Effie.

The point is that Hudson plays the leading lady of the trio in the movie, who is later cast aside and demoted to a mere backup singer so that the group can stand a chance to enjoy commercial success. She is replaced by Deena (Knowles), the one who is obviously more physically fit to sell the albums, meaning has a more 'likable' image.
When the backlash against Beyonce began, she tried to counterattack it by another statement. Referring to how she lost a lot of weight in order to play Deena, the singer said: 'I wish I could have gained 20 pounds and played Effie'. Instead of tuning down the already blown out of proportions scandal, Beyonce did nothing else but start another one, by allegedly hinting at Hudson's more shapely figure.
Disregarding all the rumors about a Knowles-Hudson rivalry, 'Dreamgirls' is really worth watching. In fact, the movie is so good that it's already generating some impressive Oscar buzz... for Jennifer Hudson, of course. Oops!
