This Sunday, HBO released the first episode of the third (and apparently, the last) season of one of the most shocking TV series ever to be made. When the pilot was aired, 'Deadwood' offended everyone's ears with its abundance of F-words and other blasphemies too shameful to record here, not to mention the outrageous life that it depicted and the politically incorrect remarks of most of the characters.
Then, it became obvious that it was more than just swearing. In a town where no law exists except that of the fastest gun, where a mixture of characters of different origins fight for power and influence, where whoring is a given and an essential aspect of life (that, and gold-digging), the viewer finds himself at a loss. It is the story of the beginning of civilization, of the mastering of the West that, most likely, is close enough to reality had we been there to witness it.
Winner of many television awards, 'Deadwood' makes a strong comeback, proving once again that intelligent dialogue, brilliant acting, extremely expensive scene settings and costumes, all created by the inspired David Milch, join forces to make a whole that will leave us absolutely speechless.
The bad news is that all this geniality will only make you regret it even more once it's over. HBO executives gave Milch another project to work on and so, instead of a fourth season next year, fans will only have to settle for a big 4-hour finale that will bring the story to a full stop.
