Tinseltown is probably best known for its long tradition in sequels. While at the beginning, a movie was made for the love of art, nowadays, most films are made in the view of one or even more sequels. That is probably why some highly grossing projects are called failures, huge flops, because their directors did not bear in mind the possibility of a sequel when they gave life to a certain plot (like 'Borat', for example).
However, no matter how many people Dan Brown's onscreen adaptation upset, the movie was from the very start likely to get some sort of a 'to be continued'. First of all, just like the 'The Da Vinci Code' novel, the film came up with no final answer to the mystery, no ultimate truth for the viewer to be confronted with.
People knew right before exiting the theater that something else would come along. It just had to. So, now sources claim that writer Goldsman, who also worked on the script of the first movie, has been assigned to the second project. He was reportedly paid $3.8 million to adapt the novel (by the same author) 'Angels and Demons' so as to come off in front of the cameras as a follow-up to the 'Code'.
Dan Brown wrote 'Angels' as a prequel to the 'Code' but in Hollywood, sequels work much better than prequels and there are many facts to prove it (ticket sales, for instance). So, the story will come after that centering on cryptologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) helping a woman (Audrey Tautou) discover the links between her father's death and a secret conspiracy.
The same sources claim that the movie studio is already considering whether to keep the same cast as in the 'Code' or not. However, the sequel is expected to hit theaters no sooner than 2008, so there's plenty time to decide on that.
