Magnolia Pictures finally managed to get the all English-language territory rights for the Billy Corben documentary called 'Cocaine Cowboys' or 'City Made of Snow'. The film focuses on the '80s drug explosion, when Colombian druglords took over the city of Miami and made it what it is today, with more stress on the social effects the unprecedented violence burst had as a whole.
Jan Hammer, the one who composed the music for the 'Miami Vice' TV series and for the upcoming documentary, was actually the man who got his hands on the film rights that also include unseen footage, interviews with police officers that dealt with drug dealers back then and even offenders who got caught and accepted to tell their side of the story.
The documentary will offer a comprehensive view in the world of organized crime from the '80s, with testimonies from both sides and other well documented commentaries.
When questioned about the latest acquisition, the president of Magnolia Pictures offered his reasons: 'It's 'Miami Vice' stripped of its cool pretension and peopled by characters that make Al Pacino look like a wimp. 'Cocaine Cowboys' is a visually imaginative, fantastically constructed and too-strange-not-to-be-true account of how Miami of today was built'.
Billy Corben, the director, is also very popular for his 2001 documentary, 'Raw Deal: A Question of Consent', in which he approached the subject of an alleged campus date rape. If that one stirred many controversies back then, we'll just have to wait until autumn to see how his 'Cowboys' will do.
