Although 'Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan' made some impressive waves both in Great Britain and at Cannes, it seems the American public is not yet ready to meet him and to like him, as well.
After making the standard surveys, Fox decided to cut down the number of venues where the farcical movie will open this Friday. They pointed out that, without being in on the joke, people would take 'Borat' as a stupid and offensive film, the last thing that the Cambridge-educated British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen would want to happen.
So, instead of opening in 2,000 major theaters in the United States, 'Borat' will run only in 700 for its first week so that people can get accustomed to it and its major character. This is the same tactic that was used with the wannabe air-headed rapper Ali G, another of Cohen's brilliant creation. Basically, the studio treats the movie as an art film, handpicks one or two major venues only in certain cities, runs it and then waits for the public to react.
'The reaction to this movie has been incredible and we know that the word-of-mouth will be excellent. Not only is there an existing audience that can't wait to see the film, what we have here is movie with an incredible amount of playability. Through a tiered release pattern, we'll be able to build a huge amount of momentum.', a representative for Fox said.
So, there is high hope for 'Borat' and, if it all goes well, the movie will turn into one of the public's favorites. This year, at least.
