The latest album of Miss Beyonce Knowles seems to have all of the above (screaming, lack of originality), plus other things to top them and to make it unworthy of being listened.
At least, that's what most critics are saying...
First, there was the uninspired title of the album, whose pronunciation makes one think of the bathroom device that is primarily used for one's personal and very intimate hygiene (yes, we're talking about a bidet). Beyonce already told MTV that it was an unfortunate choice and, had she thought better about it, she would have chosen a less 'resounding' title for her second solo album.
Second of all, while 'Dangerously In Love' got some amazing reviews on the first day of its release (as a matter of fact, it did that even before it was officially on the shelves), 'B' Day' is considered by more harsh critics as a shipwreck in the making. Many believe that Jay Z's influence might have been a little too much and that it has turned Beyonce's style and sound into something that the fans are not willing to go for.
Roger Friedman from Fox has no intention to spare Beyonce and gives her a piece of his mind. 'Post-Destiny's Child Beyonce serves up a mixed bag of Tina Turner-inspired videos, shrill singing and invariably tuneless songs. [The 'Deja Vu' first single] is catchy if you hear it enough times – like a sidewalk drill – but it lacks a consistent melody. I am told that the focus groups don't care for it.', he says about the first single released from the brand new album.
And then he goes on to say some more, but in relation to the second singe, 'Ring the Alarm': 'Among the tracks that sound less obvious – and more tired – is the next planned single, 'Ring the Alarm'. It features an extremely annoying siren and is accompanied by a bizarre video depicting an wildly angry Beyonce telling off someone (maybe Jay Z?) for cheating as if she were an enraged guest on Maury Povich.'
Many other critics share the exact same view, only they are a little more protective of the artist's feelings. Another review says about 'Ring the Alarm' that it is 'uninspired', relying on 'too much melisma', 'unlisteanable' and the screaming, 'distracting'.
It may be just us, but 'Ring the Alarm' is not all that bad as they are making it sound. Sure, the screaming is a bit annoying, but it is in tune with the rest of the song and her kicking and screaming is not that exaggerated... But the bottom line is that 'B' Day' is already getting such bad reviews that it might not be a comeback album, as Beyonce intended it to be, but the last one from her career as a performer.
Listen and see for yourselves the
video for 'Ring the Alarm'. If the track is as bad as they say, we stand corrected.
