'28 Days Later' was probably, at the time of its release, considered one of the greatest and best realized horror movie in many years, so that a sequel to it was more than imminent. But it took the film company Fox a long period of time until it finally made the first steps in that direction.
Fox, via its youth-oriented branch, Fox Atomic, will be the studio that will oversee the production of the sequel, '28 Weeks Later'. Unfortunately, the talented Danny Boyle ('Trainspotting') stepped aside from the director's chair for this new zombie-related adventure, but he will still produce it. The Spanish director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo will take Boyle's place.
Another change brought on by '28 Weeks' is related to its leading man, who will be played by the relatively unknown Jeremy Renner. He is to take on the part of Sgt. Doyle, a member of a Special Forces team, who returns to the abandoned London and plans to help to take part in its re-population. But something goes terribly wrong, as expected, when a carrier of the virus spreads the infection again and the battle against the evil creatures is ignited for a second time.

The script for the new horror flick has been penned by Rowan Joffe but many have already placed their bets on that the sequel will definitely be disappointing. The leading man's credentials include 'S.W.A.T' (the bad guy), 'Lords of Dogtown' and 'North Country' and many special appearances in TV shows like 'Angel' and 'CSI'.
Considering that few are the spin-offs that really manage to rise up to the level of excellency of the first part, we should not hold our breath for '28 Weeks Later'. It may turn out to be a box-office hit, but it's more than likely to rely more on quantity than on quality.
