Wildfire Games was proud to announce the release of the twenty-first Alpha update to its 0 A.D. open-source game of ancient warfare for supported Linux-based operating systems, as well as Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X platforms.

Dubbed Ulysses, the 0 A.D. Alpha 21 release features a large number of content and improvements, starting with a bunch of new maps that you'll most certainly want to conquer, as well as several new game modes, and continuing with the official introduction of the final civilization, namely The Seleucid Empire.

Prominent gameplay features include the Herocide and Regicide, Wonder Victory, and Last Man Standing modes, new champions and buildings, the ability for Briton Crannog to act as both a dock and civic center, and support for Hellenic Royal Stoa and Persian Hall to train new Infantry Champions in the city and town phases.

To make buildings harder to capture, brand new Gate of Ishtar and Temple of Vesta buildings were added to Persians and Romans, new patrolling feature makes units move along a predefined path, new cost technologies modifiers, balancing, and team bonuses have been implemented, along with stackable auras.

Buildings and units can now be upgraded, new maps

In some more good news, the 0 A.D. Alpha 21 "Ulysses" update finally adds support for upgrading units and buildings. For example, you can upgrade Sentry Towers to Defense Towers. Moreover, you'll be able to enjoy the new Pompeii, Amazon, Red Sea, Bahrain, Mediterranean, Marmara, Ngorongoro, Rouen, and Howe Sound maps.

"On the random map Caledonian Meadows, wide grasslands, deep forests and seas lie between opposing teams which are yet connected by paths. The map demonstrates realistic terrain generation, distributing resources by height," explain the developers in the release announcement.

Last but not least, 0 A.D. Alpha 21 adds new models for Military Colony, City Walls, Blacksmith, Colonnade, Wonder, Barracks, Dock, Market, Library, and Corral, as well as new fields and Oak trees, and a bunch of user interface improvements, such as new tooltips, additional multiplayer lobby match details, and acoustical chat notifications.
